Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as an “eyelid lift”, has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in recent years. According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), 100,000 eyelid lifts are performed each year. Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that achieves wonderfully rejuvenating, yet subtle, results.
What can blepharoplasty improve?
As we get older, the skin around our eyes stretches and sags, which can create a tired and aged appearance. Blepharoplasty corrects this problem and creates a more rested and revitalized look. Blepharoplasty can also reduce puffiness or “bags” underneath the eyes created by excess fat in the lower eyelids. Occasionally, under-eye bags may also be present in young individuals due to genetics reasons. Blepharoplasty can dramatically improve their appearance. Additionally, blepharoplasty may be effective in improving vision in cases where excess skin around the eyes disrupts visual fields. Blepharoplasty does not, however, improve dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, or sagging eyebrows. The photos below demonstrate the results that may be achieved through this procedure.
What is involved in this procedure?
In order to minimize scarring, incisions are made to follow the natural lines of the upper and lower eyelids, thereby hiding any resulting scarring in natural skin creases. In some instances the incisions can be made inside the eyelid, eliminating external scarring altogether. Excess skin, muscle and fat are removed as necessary from around the eyes. The incisions are closed using very delicate sutures, further minimizing the visibility of scars.
Dr. Desyatnikova performs blepharoplasty both at her office facility and at a hospital or outpatient surgical facility under sedation. Local or general anesthesia is used, based on patient preference and health history. The procedure usually takes between one and three hours. Following surgery patients may experience mild discomfort, including a feeling of dryness and irritation in the eyes. Pain medications are prescribed, as well as lubricating eye drops and ointment, which ease the recovery process and aid healing. Some swelling and bruising is expected and will resolve over subsequent days. Overall, minimal downtime is experienced and most patients can resume their daily activities a week after surgery.
Can additional procedures be performed with blepharoplasty?
Certain cosmetic procedures may effectively enhance the rejuvenating effect of blepharoplasty; these may include facelift or mini-facelift, brow lift and skin resurfacing, among others. Your doctor will discuss whether you may benefit from additional procedures.
