How can blepharoplasty help me appear younger?

As we get older, the skin around our eyes stretches and sags, which can create a tired and aged appearance. A blepharoplasty procedure can correct this problem and create a more rested, revitalized look. Eyelid surgery may also reduce puffiness or "bags" underneath the eyes created by excess fat in the lower lids. Occasionally, young individuals can also develop under-eye bags due to genetic reasons, and eyelid surgery can dramatically improve their appearance. Additionally, blepharoplasty may prove effective in improving vision in cases where excess skin around the eyes disrupts visual fields. Eyelid surgery does not, however, eliminate dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nor does it improve sagging eyebrows.

What does eyelid surgery involve?

In order to minimize scarring, incisions follow the natural lines of the upper and lower eyelids, thereby hiding any resulting scarring in natural skin creases. In some instances, the incisions can be made inside the eyelid, eliminating external scarring altogether. Excess skin, muscle and fat are removed and repositioned as necessary around the eyes. The incisions are closed using very delicate sutures, further minimizing the visibility of scars.

In Seattle, eyelid surgery can be performed at our office facility or outpatient surgery center under local anesthesia or sedation.

  • The procedure usually takes between 1 to 3 hours.
  • Patients may experience mild discomfort following surgery.
  • Pain medications are prescribed as well as lubricating eye drops and ointment to ease the recovery process and aid healing.
  • Some swelling and bruising is expected and will resolve over subsequent days.
  • Minimal downtime is experienced and most patients can resume their daily activities several days after surgery.
