Active FX - Laser Skin Resurfacing

Active FX is a fractional laser skin resurfacing procedure performed in a single treatment, with minimal downtime, here in our office. Fractional resurfacing has emerged recently as the new gold standard for treating aging skin changes. During the procedure, the laser is used to smooth out lines, wrinkles and scars, remove brown spots and other irregularities, and tighten the skin. It also stimulates formation of new underlying collagen that will continue to improve over time. With fractional laser treatment, only a fraction of the skin's surface is treated by the laser, leaving small "bridges" of untouched skin. This speeds the healing process and enables you to get back to normal activities in less time.

Who is a good candidate for this procedure?

Anyone with sun damage, sun spots and uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, or scarring can achieve significant results. It improves skin tone, texture, and tightness. It is most commonly used on the face, but can be used to treat the skin on the neck, chest, and hands.

What is involved in this procedure?

We usually perform the procedure in the office with a topical anesthetic cream that is applied 45 - 60 minutes before the Active FX procedure begins. There is little to moderate discomfort associated with the procedure - most patients say they feel warmth similar to sunburn. We usually give patients a mild oral sedative, so you will need someone to drive you home after the procedure. Swelling and redness with some crusting is expected after the procedure. It can be minimized by the use of head elevation as well as by making sure all the post-operative instructions are followed. The recovery takes about 5-7 days and leave from work should be arranged. With a gentle washing and moisturizing regimen, your photodamaged skin will begin to flake off within 2 days. After about 4-5 days, you can start wearing make-up. Pinkness should be gone in about a week.

Can additional procedures be performed with a performed with Active FX?

Many patients choose to have additional cosmetic procedures performed with an Active FX in order to enhance results. There are several options, but most commonly a laser resurfacing treatment is combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for additional improvement. Botox injections and fillers such as Restylane, Perlane or Juvederm can further improve a patient's appearance. For some patients Dr. Desyatnikova may recommend Botox injections before the procedure to optimize healing results.
