Post Procedure Care

  1. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen-containing products, such as Motrin, Aleve, and Advil. These medications can cause bleeding. You may supplement the prescribed pain medication with regular or Extra Strength Tylenol.

  2. Swelling and bruising will usually peak 48-72 hours after surgery. To minimize swelling, keep head constantly elevated at a 45 degree angle or greater for ten days. This can be done by using two pillows. You may have a sore throat for a few hours. You may also have general soreness for a day or two. It is important to be patient during the healing process.

  3. Activity:
    • You may shower and wash your hair the day after surgery if desired.
    • Aerobic exercise should be avoided for 14 days.
    • Avoid bending or lifting for 14 days.
    • Avoid sunning the face for one month. Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 for six months.

  4. Nutrition:
    • Low salt diet to avoid water retention
    • Start with a liquid to a soft, bland diet as increase is tolerated. Avoid food that is hard to chew.
    • Protein is necessary for optimal tissue healing. Cottage cheese and yogurt are two excellent sources of protein.
    • Drink six to eight glasses of water or juice per day.

  5. It is important to avoid the following for 24 hours after anesthesia:
    • Alcoholic beverages
    • Using public transportation e.g. bus or train without the presence of another adult
    • Driving or operation of complex machinery
    • Signing any legal documents. Important decision making should be delayed until a full recovery is made.
