Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

As we get older, the skin around our eyes stretches and sags, which can create a tired and aged appearance. A blepharoplasty procedure can correct this problem and create a more rested, revitalized look. Eyelid surgery may also reduce puffiness or "bags" underneath the eyes created by excess fat in the lower lids. Occasionally, young individuals can also develop under-eye bags due to genetic reasons, and eyelid surgery can dramatically improve their appearance. Additionally, blepharoplasty may prove effective in improving vision in cases where excess skin around the eyes disrupts visual fields. Eyelid surgery does not, however, eliminate dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nor does it improve sagging eyebrows.

Your Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Your blepharoplasty surgery experience varies based on whether Dr. Stella is operating on your upper or lower eyelids, or both. Accordingly, the length of the surgery will vary somewhat. A local anesthetic combined with a sedative is typically used during eyelid surgery, although in some cases Dr. Stella may recommend general anesthesia.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Stella carefully marks the incision locations along the natural lines and creases of the upper eyelids, so that scars are easily concealed by these folds. After making the incision, Dr. Stella removes or repositions excess fat and removes loose muscle and skin. She closes the incisions using very fine sutures to further minimize scarring.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Incisions for lower blepharoplasty may be along the inside or outside of the eyelid. Dr. Stella makes external incisions along the lash line to ensure that the scar is virtually invisible. Dissolving sutures are used to close the incisions. An internal incision, called a transconjunctival incision, is preferable in younger patients or when a patient has significant puffiness and needs to have excess fatty tissue removed. A transconjunctival incision begins by gently folding the eyelid down. The dissolving sutures are on the inside of the eyelid and are not visible.

Dr. Stella performs eyelid surgery either at our office or at an outpatient surgical center. The procedure can take 1 to 3 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.

What to Expect After Surgery

Eyelid surgery patients generally require little downtime after the surgery, returning to work or resuming their normal daily activities within a few days of having the procedure. Most patients experience some discomfort immediately after the surgery; we do provide prescriptions for pain medications to minimize discomfort. Eyedrops and ointment can also help the healing process.

Any swelling or bruising that occurs typically resolves on its own in the days following surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do men get eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures for men. Upper eyelid surgery, in particular, goes beyond cosmetic benefits for many patients, restoring their full range of vision by removing the excess sagging tissue. Hooded upper eyelids are a typical cosmetic concern for men, as shown in these before-and-after photos.

What is the cost of eyelid surgery?

The price of eyelid surgery, as with other cosmetic procedures, can vary depending on several factors. Most importantly, the extent of your procedure (i.e., upper or lower blepharoplasty, or both) will affect the total cost.

If you're comparing the prices of different practices, it's important to keep in mind that the training and experience of the plastic surgeon can influence the cost, as will the geographic location of the practice and which fees are included in the quoted price.

Dr. Stella believes in providing access to cosmetic surgery for as many people as possible. She offers financing options for qualified women and men.

Can I combine eyelid surgery with another procedure?

Absolutely. The signs of aging usually appear rather uniformly throughout the face, and having eyelid surgery alone may actually highlight signs of aging in other areas.

You can get comprehensive results by combining eyelid surgery with a mini or full facelift, for example. A brow lift can also complement your eyelid surgery. You may also want to consider nonsurgical treatments, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal filler injections, or laser skin resurfacing.

Dr. Stella will discuss whether you may benefit from additional procedures.
