Read OnAm I a facelift candidate?
Most of our facelift patients are in their 40s to 60s; however, facelifts can be performed on patients in their 70s and 80s as well, health permitting. A good candidate is someone who has sagging skin on the neck and lower face but still has some elasticity present. Women and men with mild to moderate facial aging may be candidates for a less invasive mini facelift procedure that may be performed using local anesthetic.
How is a facelift performed?
Facelifts are usually performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation in a surgery center setting to provide maximum comfort. The procedure takes several hours to complete, as it is fairly complex. Incisions are made behind and inside the ears, which will be well-hidden in natural creases and shadows. Skin and deep tissues of the face and neck are elevated as necessary and tightened in the proper direction. The muscle tissue envelope underneath the skin is tightened separately to ensure a natural look.
What should I expect after a facelift?
After a facelift, a large and fairly tight dressing is applied to prevent the accumulation of blood beneath the skin. Pain medications are prescribed to ensure a comfortable recovery. The dressings are removed the day after the procedure. For the best results, it is important to follow all post-operative instructions, such as head elevation and application of ice packs. Sutures are removed a week after surgery. Following a facelift, you may experience bruising and swelling of the face and neck, which will resolve over time.
How long is facelift recovery?
Recovery after a complete facelift typically takes about 2 to 3 weeks.
